“Sikkim” stands as a quite known Himalayan state of India. For having uncountable outstanding landmarks, this small place is quickly spreading as one of the Heavenly places on earth even by “Lonely Planet”. “Gangtok” is the capital of this heavenly state. Mostly tourists come to “Gangtok” first to plan their Sikkim tour package or even in pre-planned way also tourist must head to “Gangtok” first, as the all parts of “Sikkim” are accessible from the capital by different car and bus routes. In “Gangtok”, there are many famous landmarks not to miss by any chance. “M. G. Marg” or “Mahatma Gandhi Marg” is the most popular landmark in whole “Gangtok”. Well, many of you (specially who are not Indians) already started to question inside “What is this landmark all about?”. In a matter of answering that question I must mention “Marg” means “Road” in “Hindi” language.Few Indians may be quite familiar with this word. As everyone knows “Mahatma Gandhi” was the greatest freedom fighter in India as well as one the best noble man of the centuries. In the memory of that great hero, in India there are so many “Mahatma Gandhi Roads” in different states as “Sikkim” has one of it. So hopefully I cleared myself about the clarification of this particular landmark.

Well now let’s talk about how it is and why it’s so popular. “M. G. Marg” is so called the “Heart Of Gangtok”, is the first litter and spit free zone of the country. From morning 5 o’clock till night 12 o’clock, this road is quite a charming place to pass by. It is situated on the top center of the town. It was built long before, but it was totally a different looking road previously. Cars used to go and lots of chaos used to happen on the street. But now by the finest Himalayan architectures and European influences this road becomes a legend in Sikkim’s history. In the morning all the office goers gather all around the street in different cafes for a scrumptious breakfast. Peace loving pigeons scatter everywhere. In some cold sunny mornings, all the beautiful high healed, long coated Sikkim girls give an added rose on the pleasant beauty of the road. No car, bi-cycle is allowed on the road. Here only you can have a gentle Himalayan walk with fresh cool breeze. Café like “Baker’s Café” gives a tremendous bonus in a traveler’s diary. Mostly the tourists start their gatherings from the late afternoon, as the return from their local sight-seeing. Slowly evening knocks on the door and beautiful lamps of “M. G. Marg” are turned on, the flowers start to shine in a lighting way, the cold clean stones of the road turns to be black shinning diamonds. In the late evening “M. G. Marg” looks like a carnival street with the variety of gorgeous lights of different stalls and many kinds of people with their various ways of happiness. The souvenir collections in stalls are hard things to avoid as they are too catchy for a traveler eye. Many kinds of small food stalls like “Roll-Corner” will take your food-loving spirit out for sure. The liters are unbelievably cheap than any other places of India, in an almost half price. So you can booze as much you want in some sophisticated bars or you are also allowed for decent boozing on the road. If you are here around any festival time, like Christmas or New-year time, then you can enjoy open air live music performances on this street with a chilled “Hit” beer or a warm “Sailo” redwine. Don’t dare to smoke in this street, as it is totally offended by the local police authority. So this is how the hill prince “Gangtok” talks through the soothing voice of “M. G. Marg”. Try it and I promise you will find it as one of the finest place on Himalayan region and as a symbol of civilization of Sikkim’s history.
